Bajans bowl out Guyana for 136 in top-of-the-table clash

(WICB) Bridgetown, Barbados — Barbados bowled exceptionally well to take all 10 Guyana wickets on the first day of the fifth and final round of matches in the West Indies Cricket Board’s Under-19 Three-day Tournament on Tuesday.

The Bajans restricted the visitors to 136 off 79 overs at the Desmond Haynes Oval – the last four wickets fell for the addition of just seven runs. Left-arm seamer Darnell Greenidge and his new ball partner Akeem Jordan shared five wickets to give the home side valuable bonus points. The performance put the home team one step closer towards claiming the title.

The spin twin of Chaim Holder and Chad Williams took the other five wickets as the Guyanese struggled on a rain-hit day. Captain Shawn Pereira topscored with a fighting knock of 33, while left-handed opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul made a patient 25 off 156 balls in four hours.

Over at the Weymouth Complex, Windward Islands rebounded from defeat against Guyana in the last round to dominate Jamaica. Off-spinner Kenneth Dember took six wickets for 45 off 14.5 overs as the defending champions were bowled out for 116 late in the day. He was assisted by left-arm pacer Preston McSween, who took two early wickets. The Windwards will start the second day just 95 runs away from first innings points.

The innings of the day came from Leeward Islands captain Akeem Saunders, who batted 4 ½ hours for 68 not out as his side enjoyed their best day of the tournament. The West Indies Under-19 representative faced 199 balls and hit seven fours to guide his side to 221-4 off 83 overs on a placid pitch at Kensington Oval.

The stylish Saunders has so far added an unbroken 73 for the fifth wicket with the forthright Deno Baker, who is 41 not out. Earlier in the day the skipper added 86 for the third wicket with opener Darren Hobson, who made 53 off 166 balls, including two straight sixes. T&T’s pacer Philton Williams worked up some to end the day with 3-56 off 18 overs.
