Fire destroys San Fernando businesses

(Trinidad Guardian) Six San Fernando businesses were destroyed when a fire razed a two-storey commercial building on Mucurapo Street on Friday night. Firefighters were challenged in fighting the blaze at the building after they ran out of water. A number of people were left jobless. Among the businesses destroyed were LA Designs, Palai’s Imperial Bar, Wendy and Dexter New Wave Fashion, Lil Things/Saran’s CDs, The Reliable Store and Roshnie’s Beauty Salon.

At around 8.30 pm, fire was seen on the upper floor of the building, which is owned by Arthur Abraham of Sumadh Gardens, Vistabella. Appliances from Mon Repos and San Fernando Fire Stations were dispatched to the scene and firefighters, under the supervision of FSOs Gopaul and Nanan, extinguished the blaze shortly after 10 pm. While trying to control the blaze, firefighters ran out of water and had to call for additional water tenders.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined. Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission officials visited the scene and Cpl Hosein is continuing investigations.
