T&T mom bludgeoned to death in bed

(Trinidad Express) A 64-year-old Barrackpore mother was bludgeoned to death in bed yesterday while her visually impaired husband slept in the downstairs section of their home.

Leela Deonarinesingh, a mother of two, of Oli Mohammed Trace, Rochard Road, was found naked with her head bashed in.

Within hours, police detained a man in his 20s after video footage from a closed circuit television camera located at a nearby business place showed the suspect sneaking into the property of the Deonarinesingh family.

The suspect recently began living and working in a car wash located near the Deonarinesingh family home.

Deonarinesingh’s husband, Deodath Deonarinesingh, 69, discovered her body at around 9.15 a.m. yesterday.

The man told police he went in search of his wife as he had not heard from her yesterday morning.

The husband said he walked into the bedroom and felt his way to the bed, and touched her cold body.

Deonarinesingh told the Express: “I thought she went to the market and I thought after an hour or two she would come back. I was listening to the radio, but I was wondering why she was taking so long. I went upstairs to see if she fell back asleep. I went to the bed, and I put my hand out to feel for her, but I felt a coldness. I started bawling and calling the neighbours”.

Neighbour Kimraj Ramkissoon, 62, ran over to the house and saw Deonarinesingh’s body covered in blood. The drawers of her dresser had been ransacked.

The video footage showed the suspect cutting a hole in the chain-linked fence of the Deonarinesingh home and entering the premises at around 1 a.m.

Residents in the area said about a month ago the suspect came to work at the car wash and also lived on the premises. They said the suspect would sometimes ask Deonarinesingh for food which she would give to him.

Early yesterday morning the suspect was seen with a sum of money at a bar in the area buying beers for other patrons, and asking about renting a car to go to Penal.

The dead woman’s husband said, “She was a caring person and he might ask for food so they would talk, but I didn’t know he had his aim on her. She was so kindhearted that if you ask for anything you would get it.”

An autopsy is expected to be done tomorrow.
