`Search your children’s school bags’ – senior Bajan cop

(Barbados Nation) It is not uncommon for schoolchildren to carry to school or bring home contraband such as illegal drugs, weapons or other property, warns Assistant Commissioner of Police Oral Williams.

Addressing the closing ceremony of the Royal Barbados Police Force’s Young Crusaders Summer Camp at the Police Band headquarters, District “A” Police Station in Station Hill yesterday, Williams told parents: “I want you to search bags when [your children] arrive from school and search bags before they leave for school.”

He said it was the parents’ responsibility to ensure that illegal items were not found at their homes. “When you find things that you do not know about, demand that they are returned to the owners and you can avoid the inconvenience and embarrassment of having police knocking at your door early in the morning to execute a search warrant.”

Williams said that around the country the evidence was that the principal agents of socialization, the family and church, had been failing to prepare children for life ahead.
