Sophia woman dies after allegedly set on fire

Carmelita Jones, 24 years, of ‘B’ Field, Sophia, who was allegedly set afire succumbed at the GPHC yesterday.

Police today said that Jones reportedly suffered severe burns at her home on September 18, 2012, when it is alleged that her reputed husband Melroy Simpson, 34 years, threw a flammable liquid on her while she was holding a lamp that was lit at the time.

Simpson was charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm on September 21, 2012, and appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate Court where he was placed on $200,000 bail.

The police said he has since been re-arrested and is in custody.
