Nickerie police gets ‘go fast’ boat

(de Ware Tijd) NIEUW NICKERIE – The Nickerie police received a new ‘go fast’ boat from the gold sector restructuring commission yesterday. District Commissioner Wedprekash Joeloemsingh had earlier donated a 75 hp outboard engine.

Regional police commander Stanley Benschop says that with these gifts the police are now equipped to patrol the waters. The boat will be used to fight crime at the western border and at sea, including piracy off the Nickerie and Coronie coasts. ‘We’ve just had cases of piracy whereby fishermen were robbed off all of their belongings,’ Benschop says. The police will also deal with the drugs and gold smuggling out of neighbouring Guyana and inspect illegal logging along the banks of the Corantijn River.

‘We have a good boat with an excellent engine, so I think we’ll soon see the results of our crime busting operations.’ The police official was quite grateful for the donations by DC Joeloemsingh and Gerold Dompig of the gold sector restructuring commission. Dompig emphasized that his organization supports security throughout the country so he will always be ready to aid and assist when it comes to security operations. He promised an extra engine, additional life jackets and possibly a siren and flashing lights for interceptions. The DC was equally happy with the gifts, adding that cooperation of stakeholders will help achieve much.
