President Donald Ramotar recently met with representatives from Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, the largest independent oil and gas company in the United States, which has renewed its interest in petroleum exploration in Guyana.
Anadarko International Business Developer Richard Lapin, accompanied by Head of the Petroleum Unit of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission Noel Dennison, met with Ramotar and Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment Robert Persaud, a press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said. Lapin told GINA that although much preliminary work is still to be undertaken, the oil and gas outlook in Guyana is positive.
“Anadarko had embarked on a geological assessment of the region in its frontier quest and believes that its technical and financial capacity will be a value added to the emergence of the oil and gas sector on the local shores,” he said.
Also, in September, Anadarko Vice President of Business Development Ian J. Cooling led a delegation to former president Bharrat Jagdeo to signal the company’s interest.
Government has also received a proposal from US-based petroleum company Prime Energy LLC- Caribbean to build an oil refinery in Guyana which officials say will create employment for about 100 persons.
President of the company, Jerry Brooks, had said that its interest in establishing a refinery here lies in the fact that several countries worldwide are looking to 20,000 barrels per day refineries for their countries due to the high costs incurred to transport crude oil to the US for refining.
