The pool could have been built for half that cost

Dear Editor,

It is truly amazing that in every sector citizens are being taken for a ride as money is squandered or pocketed with great abandonment, I give but just one of many, many examples.
We learnt from yesterday’s Stabroek News that the cost of the Olympic-size swimming pool is $584M. I have pointed out before that if the Government had only followed designs and construction methodology used in this country, by a local architect and engineers at the Castellani Swimming Pool, the pool could have been constructed for less than half of that cost.
As a reminder, Castellani pool which was at the time Olympic-size, was built using clay tiles fired locally from our own clay. All that the government needed to do was to follow what was done successfully many years ago, a pool which is still serviceable after nearly over three decades.
This waste is unnecessary if not criminal and requires full investigation and explanation.

Yours faithfully,
Hamilton Green
Mayor
