Finally an admission about NCN

Dear Editor,

Since it was a holiday (May Day) I was relaxing at home, and flicking through the Stabroek News I came across some interesting items.

Firstly, ‘NCN to implement hiring freeze’: Mr Mohamed Sattaur was reported as saying in reference to the withdrawal of adverts by government from SN, that “NCN is controlled by government and has to comply with government regulations; if it had publicly criticized the withdrawal of ads, it would have been acting insubordinately.” Well at last an admission.

Secondly, ‘Singh doubtful of opposition support for additional funds’: with reference to the AFC and APNU non-approval of funds in the Budget, Mr Singh was reported as saying that “the opposition parties cannot be trusted to approve supplementary papers.” Well, wake up, smell the coffee – this is democracy. Did the people not give the opposition that power?  A further thought, didn’t the opposition parties request pre-budget consultation?  Did it happen? No – and this is the result. A little bit of consultation may well have overcome this long drawn out brouhaha in the National Assembly, and the National Assembly would have been able to devote the weeks of wasted time to other pressing national issues.

Thirdly, a non-political article, ‘Last accused in 82lb Skeldon cocaine bust freed’: There had been four accused in 82lb Skeldon cocaine bust, but in the case of three of them the court had upheld a no case submission because their names had mysteriously disappeared from the charge. The last of the four was freed on Monday. Is there not a chain of custody with case files?  Surely everyone who had custody of the case file signs for it? Surely the mystery can be readily solved by examining and interviewing the custodians?

Yours faithfully,
