Ramotar should have told NCN to give time to the opposition parties

Dear Editor,

If the denial of money to NCN and GINA will cause some people in the two news agencies to lose their employment, it is indeed an unpleasant situation. However, it is no secret that NCN is very biased towards the government and ruling party. The international observers recognized that also.

All this unpleasantness could have been prevented if only President Ramotar had acted decisively. Donald Ramotar, a man I have known for decades, is a genuine democrat, and he is fully aware of NCN’s one-sidedness. From the day he was sworn in he should have ordered that NCN give the opposition parties time on NCN to put over their side and how they see things – of course with necessary checks and balances. Had that happened the opposition parties would have had no reason to stop money going to the state-owned TV and radio.
Still, it is not too late.

Yours faithfully,
W P George
