Suspect in murder of US doctor found hanging in police station

At about 0520h today police said that the body of Omesh Thakurdeen, 27 years, of No 72 Village, Corentyne, was found hanging in the lock-ups at the No 51 Police Station, Corentyne, Berbice.

Police say that Thakurdeen was taken into custody at about 2050h last night, during investigations into the murder of US-based Medical Doctor Max Kungel, whose body was found in the backdam at No. 70 Village, Corentyne, on March 17, 2013, with gunshot injuries.

A statement from the police today said that while in the lock-ups at the Police Station visits were made by the police to Thakurdeen’s cell in which he was the only prisoner; and during the check at 0520h he was found hanging by his shirt from the grill work.

The body is at the Skeldon Hospital Mortuary awaiting a PME as the investigations continue.
