Amaila hydropower project bill not passed

The opposition tonight thwarted a bill which the government says is critical to the advancing of the Amaila Falls Hydropower project.

When a division was called for at the end of debate on the Hydro Electric Power Amendment bill the vote came in at 32 against and 31 for. However Government Chief Whip Gail Teixeira protested that APNU’S James Bond was not in his seat at the time of the vote. After consultation with the Clerk, the Speaker ruled that the vote of Bond did not count and the result.was then amended to 31/31. The motion was still not carried and therefore the Bill not passed.
