No bail for accused in $3M phone card robbery

A man accused of robbing another man of $3M in phone cards was remanded to prison yesterday.

John McKenzie, 28, of 299 Republic Park, East Bank Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It is alleged that on June 8, McKenzie, while in the company of others, robbed Davie Langevine of a quantity of phone cards, valued $3M.Counsel for the accused, Paul Fung-a-Fat, requested bail, telling the court that McKenzie found a phone card at a wash bay, attempted to sell it and was charged with robbery. Prosecutor Vernette Pindar objected to bail and McKenzie was remanded until his next appearance on June 28.
