GPHC hosting family planning training for doctors, midwives

The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) in collaboration with family planning physicians from the US and Australia are hosting a five-day workshop on Family Planning and Intra-Uterine Devices.

Doctors, midwives and personnel from Maternal and Child Health and Regional Health Services and the GHPC are participating in the exercise which started on Monday, a press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said. his training will cover the insertion of Intra-Uterine Contraceptive Devices (IUDs) and other methods of Family Planning Practices.

The sessions are being conducted by Dr Ruth Derkenne, Family Physician (from Australia), Dr Zeina Saliba MD – Chief Resident Family Medicine and Psychiatry (USA) and Dr Narine Singh (Guyana).

The programme was initiated by the Maternal and Child Health Department under its work plan to provide better opportunities and meet the needs of Guyanese women in relation to family planning methods. It also forms part of the ministry’s broader vision of providing professional upgrades for health care professionals in the various fields.
