No garbage collection on Middle Rd

Dear Editor,

I am writing this letter with frustration after four weeks of waiting for the City Council or contractor trucks to pass through Middle Road and collect our garbage; it is the most ridiculous situation ever I could remember.

What is most frustrating is I wrote a letter on the 6th November, 2012 which was published and Mr.  Royston King, Public Relations Officer, Mayor and City Council, replied and stated how the truck comes around every two weeks and I should call his office if I have any concerns in the future.  At present I am sick and tired of calling this office and talking to a representative, asking when? When? And to this day as I pen this letter, no garbage trucks have come around.

It is amazing, all the letters from Keith Burrowes, Royston King and government officials about the garbage and what they want or plan to do and I have not seen any improvement.

It is sad to know what Georgetown is going to, as they will say “it gone to the dogs”. Why is it so difficult for the council to have trucks working daily, weekly picking up garbage around the various areas? If the council cannot afford it, then the Government must take the bull by the horns and do something. We cannot continue like this, this situation is affecting people’s daily lives and visitors are disgusted at the state of the city. My kids who visited from overseas were shocked in December, 2012.

If anyone drives through Hunter Street, they will see a huge pile of garbage on the street. It is causing a traffic concern for many, this part of Hunter Street is a two-way, one can get hurt. An accident is waiting to happen as people are driving away from the garbage into the oncoming traffic.

The rainy season will come soon, and, many streets will flood because of the piles of garbage all over the city and then the health of people will be at risk.

Why can we not hire (contract) more contractors or give them more areas to clean, zone 7, 8 & 9 etc and pay the money, we cannot allow this to continue.

We need to keep the city and residential areas clean all the time, until the council and government solve their internal issues. The citizen should not be suffering because of the political issues.

On the 3rd January, 2013, I paid my rates and taxes for the entire year and I am not even getting the services I have paid for.

We  as residents of Middle Road, need our  garbage to be collected on a week-end basis, how hard is this, why can’t a truck come by every Thursday for example, this mean 52 times per year to keep the area clean, tidy and reduce the health risk.

Yours faithfully,
E Whyte
