It is the moral duty of the gov’t to ban styrofoam

Dear Editor,

It was with open-mouthed consternation that I read Mr. Indranauth Haralsingh’s exhortation to the citizens of this country in Saturday’s SN in the letter `Reduce, re-use and recycle’. With all due respect Mr. Haralsingh, I do not know which Universe you inhabit but it is not up to the consumer to ban styrofoam materials in our offices or our homes. It is the moral duty of the Government to ban the importation of styrofoam into our country. Many citizens, me included, wrote to our past President, the so called Champion of the Earth (God only knows which Earth), begging him to ban the importation of styrofoam into Guyana. I eventually got a generic acknowledgement of my letter, no doubt because I was a pest and followed up with many phone calls to the OP. But after that, nothing.

The majority of citizens of this country have to clean our own drains and parapets. Now you want us to “clean the drainage system and fix the potholes in front of our premises?” OMG. What with? Are you going to supply the materials and manpower to fulfill these tasks? I do believe I speak for the majority of citizens of Guyana here, we have no equipment to undertake these monumental tasks. This is why we pay taxes. OK?

And on a completely different topic, can the President please tell us exactly what is the salary of the Chairman of GuySuCo? After reading his reply to Mr. Komal Chand I still cannot find the answer. There are too many secrets in this government. As citizens we are entitled to know what these people in high places are paid – and compare their salaries to probably the most important workers in our country – the koker attendants, the men who keep the Atlantic from drowning us all.

Yours faithfully,
Jennifer Bulkan
