Roberts’ Champions Boxing Gym gets a helping hand

The Roberts Champions Boxing Gym amateur card billed for November 9 received a timely shot in the arm yesterday when the Hand in Hand Mutual Fire and Life Insurance Company became a sponsor for the event.

During a simple presentation ceremony at the company’s head office, representative, Mark Samaroo presented former national bantamweight and featherweight champion, Jeff Roberts with a sponsorship cheque to aid in the card’s expenses.

According to Samaroo, the insurance company has been supporting boxing in Guyana throughout the years and “We are very pleased to be associated with the Robert’s Champions Boxing Gym in promoting the sport in Berbice.

We urge the coach and the members of the gym to continue striving for excellence as they improve themselves as well as keeping the sport alive.”

Roberts, thanked Samaroo on behalf of the company and also encouraged other corporate entities to follow in Hand in Hand footsteps.

The open air 11-fight card will box off at 18:00hrs at Stelling Road in New Amsterdam and is scheduled to attract the top amateur boxers from the city and the Ancient County who will vie for trophies and medals.

Medalists at last month’s South American Youth Games in Peru, Travis Fraser, Joel Williamson and Michael April will be some of the pugilists representing Berbice.
