Boat collision at Kartabu leaves one dead

At approximately 19:00 hrs this evening, two motor vessels collided at Kartabo, Mazaruni River resulting in the death of one passenger.

GINA said that one of the vessels was captained by Lloyd Apple, 54 years, while the other was being operated by Pamela Persaud, 34 years who had her uncle, Anthony Williams in the vessel. Williams succumbed to the injuries he sustained during the collision, GINA said.

Apple is in custody at the Bartica Police station while Persaud is hospitalised at the Bartica hospital.

Public Works Minister, Robeson Benn said in the GINA release that boat operators are not adhering to safety procedures in the night as they are operating without lights, which is against the rules.

The Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) is investigating the incident.
