Guyanese man dies in Antigua prison

A Guyanese man collapsed and died on Monday in an Antiguan prison, less than two weeks after he was found guilty of rape and remanded.

According to an Antigua Observer report, 56-year-old Jaswick Jones, who had been a teacher, was expected to be sentenced for the rape of a teenager on December 12th but died suddenly after collapsing in the prison yard.

The report said that the man was diabetic and had an enlarged heart. He had claimed during his trial in the High Court that he was wrongfully accused of raping the child and said it was not possible because of the aforementioned health conditions. The jury, however, reached a unanimous guilty verdict on November 21.
