Maid charged with stealing employer’s underwear

A maid accused of stealing over $350,000 worth of items from her employer, including almost three dozen pairs of men’s underwear, was granted bail after denying the allegation on Thursday.

Selena Cholmondeley, 38, of 276 Foulis Housing Scheme appeared before a city court faced with a larceny in a dwelling house charge. It is alleged that Cholmondeley, between July 18 and July 28, at Kitty, stole from the dwelling house of Bishanti Balgobin an iPad, two cellphones, a gold chain, 25 briefs, and 10 boxer briefs. The total value of the items was declared as $362,500.

According to the police’s facts, on July 18, Balgobin secured her home and left for Bartica. On July 28, she returned and discovered the mentioned articles missing. She immediately made contact with her maid, who was reportedly the only person who had access to the home via a provided key. When contacted, Cholmondeley denied that she stole the items. However, she admitted that she had gone into the house to clean.

Acting on information received, police went to the defendant’s home and conducted a search. There, a quantity of items, including the iPad and some briefs belonging to Balgobin, was recovered.

Cholmondeley was subsequently arrested and charged.

Prosecutor Michael Grant raised no objections to bail and Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry set it in the sum of $100,000.

Balgobin will return to court on September 9 for statements.
