MARAD concerned over careless boat operators

The Director General of the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) Claudette Rogers, today said she has noted with concern the haphazard and careless mode of operation some boat operators continue to display on the country’s waterways.

A statement from MARAD said that this observation comes in light of a recent publication in the Stabroek News highlighting the dangerous manner in which a boat operator accommodated passengers on the vessel which he is responsible to ensure that safety of the passengers and cargo is maintained while traversing the waterways. The MARAD statement did not identify the report in question.

Rogers said that MARAD will soon be embarking on a stringent campaign to ensure that all safety practices are adhered to, and operators found being non-compliant will be dealt with accordingly.
