Heavyweight teams off to perfect start

Heavyweights West Front Road, Back Circle, Leopold Street alongside newcomer Channel-9 Warriors got their campaigns off to the perfect start when the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Georgetown tourney continued on Tuesday.

Staged at the California Square Tarmac, East Ruimveldt, West Front Road-Gold is Money dismissed Castello Housing Scheme by a 3-1 margin. Hubert Pedro netted a brace in the ninth and 18th minutes while Michael Pedro scored in the 17th minute.

On target in the loss was Rawle Jones in the 13th minute. Similarly, former zonal and national winner Back Circle edged Gold Star 2-1 compliments of goals from Nick Williams and Devon Harris in the second and 12th minutes respectively. For the losers, Samuel Dey scored in the third minute. On the other hand, previous champ Leopold Street edged Young Ballers 1-0. Anthony Charles netted the only goal in the 17th minute.

Meanwhile, recent addition Channel-9 Warriors dismantled Old School Ballers 4-0. Joshua Fiffie recorded a second half double in the 15th and 20th minutes while Kemo Lawrence and Kevin Barrow scored in the eighth and 10th minutes.

In other results, Jamoon Drive downed Albouystown-A by a 2-1 margin. Wesley Greenidge and Andre Webber scored in the eighth and 20th minutes in the win while Osafo Peters netted in the loss in the sixth minute.

Similarly, Bent Street squeaked past Shopping Plaza 1-0 compliments of a Ryan Hackett 17th minute conversion while Stevedore Housing Scheme edged Festival City Warriors by an identical score line. Dorwin Filter scored in the 25th second of the match. Meanwhile, Laing Avenue and Upsetters battled to a scoreless draw.

Action in the group stage continues today at the Burnham Court Basketball Tarmac. In the opening fixture at 19:00hrs, South Ruimveldt will oppose Shopping Plaza while Jamoon Drive will lock horns with North East La Penitence at 19:30hrs.

The third fixture will then witness Bent Street opposing Festival City Street Fighters at 20:00hrs while defending champion North Ruimveldt will lock horns with Young Ballers in the fourth match at 20:30hrs.

In the fifth showdown, former winner Leopold Street will oppose Island All-Stars at 21:00hrs while Globe Yard will match skills with Channel-9 Warriors in the sixth showdown from 21:30hrs.

The final two matchups of the night will pit Sparta Boss against Gold Star from 22:00hrs and Festival City Warriors against previous holder Holmes Street Tigerbay from 22:30hrs.

Winner of the event will pocket $500,000, the championship trophy and the right to represent the zone at the national tourney while the second, third and fourth placed units will collect $200,000. $150,000 and $100,000 respectively and the corresponding accolade.
