Cuyuni cave-in miner was buried for almost half an hour

Omet Samuels, the miner who died after the pit he was working in collapsed on Wednesday, was buried for close to half-an-hour, his wife said.

Samuels, 32, of ‘B’ Field, Sophia was working in a mining pit at Toroparu Backdam, Cuyuni River, when the walls of the pit caved in and covered him.

His wife, Shellon, Fraser told Stabroek News yesterday that she was told that the man was tending to a hole in the pit when the wall crashed down on him.

“He was buried for 25 minutes, you know,” grieving woman said. “They seh is lil bit mud was on he but how you gon take 25 minutes to dig up lil mud,” she lamented. A post-mortem examination performed on Samuels revealed that he died from suffocation.

Fraser told Stabroek News that Samuels had been working in the interior for six weeks and she had last spoken to him on Tuesday night.

While the death of her husband places a tremendous burden on Fraser and her children, she said that the company Samuels worked for has been keeping in close contact. She said the company has paid for all of the funeral arrangements and promised to assist her in taking care of the two children.
