In T&T: Chinese proprietor gunned down in broad daylight

(Trinidad Express) Shoppers went scampering for safety yesterday afternoon when the proprietor of a business place, along Southern Main Road, Curepe, was gunned down in broad daylight.

According to police reports, Chinese national Hi-Hong Huang, 35, had just arrived at his business place, Happiness Supermarket, when the incident took place.

Huang, police said, had exited a white panel van, which he parked outside the supermarket, before going to the side of the vehicle to remove a large cardboard box.

As he was walking towards the supermarket, he was approached by a man of African descent who attempted to remove the box from his hands.

Huang, police said, resisted and a struggle ensued. At the same time, Huang was approached from behind by another man of African descent.

Several loud explosions were then heard and Huang fell to the ground bleeding from multiple gunshot injuries. Fearful for their lives, customers who were in the immediate vicinity ran for safety, while the two assailants fled the scene on foot.

The police and emergency health services were notified and Huang was rushed to Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope for treatment.

He died while being operated on.

Inspector Siewdass and a party of officers from St Joseph Police Station and Region II Homicide visited the scene.

This killing has pushed the murder toll for the year to date to 104.

At the same time last year, the figure was 118.
