(Jamaica Gleaner) President of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), Whycliffe ‘Dave’ Cameron, says he is not too perturbed by developments surrounding the recent decision by the directors of Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) not to support his candidacy for re-election.
The directors of the JCA, at a board meeting on Tuesday, voted 10-6 to support the candidacy of Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) president, and former West Indies fast bowler, Joel Garner, to be the next leader of the regional body.
“I am not too perturbed by the developments, which took place on Tuesday,” Cameron told The Gleaner yesterday.
“It is not the country, by and large, who are not supporting me. It is the desire of some of the board of directors.
“However, my understanding is that there should be an annual general meeting of the association (JCA) on February 17, at which time, the decision by the directors could be overturned.”
Jamaican Cameron, who is seeking a second two-year term in office, is said to have lost out on the vote of the JCA, which supported his candidacy in 2013, as a result of his handling of the debacle concerning the withdrawal of the West Indies team from their tour of India last October.
It is understood that majority of the directors, headed by JCA president, Wilford “Billy” Heaven, were not impressed with the reasons given by Cameron for the abandonment of the tour, as well as his plans for settling the resultant US$42 million to the Indian board.
However, when quizzed about the reported main argument surrounding the JCA directors’ decision not to support him, Cameron said he had a strong defence.
“The handling of the decisions surrounding the India tour was WICB board of directors decisions, not Dave Cameron’s decisions,” cited Cameron.
“And, at some point in time, we (WICB board of directors) could make the minutes of these board of directors meetings available.”
BOARD MAKE-UP
The WICB board of directors is made up of two representatives from the six territorial boards of the region.
Jamaica is represented on the board by JCA president Wilford ‘Billy’ Heaven and first vice-president Donovan Bennett.
It is understood that Cameron, a former treasurer of the JCA, is to be nominated for the post of president by the Guyana Cricket Association.
The bid, it is further understood, will be seconded by Windward Islands Cricket Board of Control, whose president is incumbent WICB vice-president and Cameron’s running mate, Emmanuel Nathan.
Garner, meanwhile, will be nominated by the BCA with the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) in strong support.
TTCB director, and head of the WICB marketing and business development committee, Baldath Mahabir, will be Garner’s running mate.
The Leeward Islands Cricket Association, in the meanwhile, who voted against Cameron in his 2012 presidential bid has not yet, according to reports, decided on a position for the 2015 vote.
The WICB annual general meeting and election of officers will be held on March 7 in Kingston. Nominations close tomorrow.
