Chanderpaul can still play for Guyana if he wants to

Despite not informing the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) of his decision to retire from international cricket Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) President Drubahadur said the veteran batsman can still play for the Guyana national team if he chooses to.

Chanderpaul, last Friday wrote the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) informing them that he had retired from international cricket effectively ending his over two decades career as a professional cricketer.

Chanderpaul is down to compete in the Masters Champions League (MCL) which bowls off on January 28.

The MCL rules stipulate that only retired players will be allowed to compete in the T20 competition.

Drubahdur said yesterday that the GCB still had not received any official notification from Chanderpaul or the WICB.

“All I’ve learnt so far is the same as what you see in the papers. The

WICB has to guide the GCB because officially Shiv hasn’t sent us

anything,” he added.

Drubahadur said that the left handed batsman, who last week played in the semi-finals of the NAGICO Super50 competition for Guyana, has not indicated in any way that he wishes to retire from first-class

cricket and, as such, is still qualified to represent Guyana should he

decide to continue his domestic career.

The WICB’s Professional Cricket League (PCL) four-day tournament is set to restart February 12 and Drubahadur admitted that he was not sure whether Chanderpaul would be available for the first few rounds of the competition since the MCL ends February 13.
