Painter charged with robbing Bourda stallholders

A painter was remanded to prison by a city magistrate yesterday after he was accused of being one of the two men that robbed Bourda Market stallholders of over half a million dollars on Monday.

It is alleged that on July 11, at Orange Walk, Bourda, Michael King, 35, of Lot 38 Third Street, Alexander Village, Georgetown, while being in the company of another and armed with a gun, robbed Wayne Miller of several items, worth $527,000.

King, who was represented by attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat, pleaded not guilty to the charge, which was read by magistrate Fabayo Azore.

According to the attorney, who applied for a bail release, his client had no knowledge of the robbery.

The magistrate subsequently denied bail and ordered King to return to court on July 27.

The attack occurred around 11pm in the vicinity of Orange Walk and Robb Street, whilst Miller, 51, and Darmenna Wong, 43 of Block ‘Y’, Section ‘C’, Grove, East Bank Demerara (EBD) were closing their stall for the day.

According to a Guyana Police Force statement, Miller and Wong were at their stall when they were approached by the men who robbed them of the cash. According to the release, an alarm was raised and the suspects were apprehended by public-spirited citizens.

The police, who were summoned, had retrieved a 9mm pistol and five live matching rounds in the possession of one suspects.
