Guinness Greatest of the Streets down to final four

Defending champs Sparta Boss will oppose 2011 winners Back Circle while 2010 victor Broad Street will engage Tucville in tomorrow’s semi-finals

of the Guinness Greatest of the Streets football tournament following Saturday’s quarterfinals.

The large viewership at Demerara Park witnessed Sparta Boss being pushed to the limit by the unpredictable Camp Street All-Stars led by Wendell Austin.

Although the contest was settled 1-0 in the 21st minute by Courtney Britton via a first time right side strike into the left corner, Austin’s tenacity and skill proved to be a constant threat to the East La Penitence unit.

The burly Austin almost levelled the contest three minutes later, rifling a powerful right-foot strike which was deflected desperately by final defender Sheldon Shepherd.

Austin in the 32nd minute, flashed a right foot effort just wide of the lower right corner, signaling his intention to maintain the fight against the tournament favourite.

His exploits continued in the 37th minute as a left foot shot from the right side of the field, forced another smart save from Shepherd, much to the disappointment of the partisan crowd.

The defending champs eventually held on to setup a showdown with fierce rival Back Circle, after the latter overcame North East La Penitence 1-0.

Unlikely substitute Sylvester Joseph fashioned the deciding goal, stabbing the ball into the centre of the net, after collecting a right side pass in the 19th minute.

Meanwhile, Tucville overcame 2012 winners Leopold Street 2-0 to reach their first semi-final.

Following a scoreless opening period, Leon Richardson gave Tucville the lead in the 21st minute, lashing a first time strike from the left side down the middle of the net, after collecting a right side pass.

Okeene Fraser equalized for the former champs seven minutes later placing his right-foot effort into the left corner following a one-two pass combination.

However, Dennis Edwards secured the upset result for Tucville in the 37th minute. Latching onto a squared pass from Delon Williams, he calmly slotted the ball into the net.

They will now meet Broad Street Bullies in the final four after the aforesaid team defeated 2013 winners Queen Street Tiger Bay 2-0 in the clash of the former champions.

Following a goalless first half, Queen Street Tiger Bay  conceded an own goal in the 21st minute as a back pass from Keoma Gravesande rolled past Jeffrey Newton the final defender who was off his goal-line and into the right corner.

Lennox Cort then drove the final nail into the coffin in the 39th minute. Cutting across the body of Newton during a two-on-one situation following a counterattack, Cort fired the ball into the right corner. The semi-final round will commence at 20:00hrs at the National Cultural Centre tarmac.
