M&CC to seek gov’t aid in relocating residents of buildings listed for demolition

The Mayor and City Council will be seeking support from central government to relocate and house occupants living in ruinous buildings that are listed to be torn down.

The announcement was made yesterday at the council’s statutory meeting by Town Clerk Royston King.

City Hall, in an advertisement in Sunday’s Guyana Times said a resolution was passed to demolish the buildings which are in a ruinous state and pose a danger to occupants and members of the public.

King explained that the M&CC was going to seek support from relevant ministries and agencies “to help relocate some of those persons who occupy buildings that are unsafe to their own lives.”

City Engineer Colvern Venture told Stabroek News that the exercise is targeting properties that are dangerous to members of the public.

If persons request time to conduct repairs to buildings it would be granted, Venture explained, adding that they are willing to work with persons.

Fifty-two derelict buildings are listed to be torn down.

The advertisement cited Georgetown Building by-laws under the Municipal and District Councils Act, Chapter 28:01. The notice said persons requiring more information can contact the Public Relations Division of the municipality on 225 -2218. The notice also informed that the City Engineer’s Department will begin pulling down the buildings from October 5.
