EPA will probe poultry farm complaint

Dear Editor,

The Environmental Protection Agency thanks your office for the opportunity to respond to the letter penned by Mr. Yusuf with the title of `Unfenced poultry farm affecting other livestock farmers’, which appeared in the March 31, 2016, edition of the Stabroek News. Please find below, the Agency’s response.

Two poultry rearing operations within the Kilcoy-Fyrish area had engaged the attention of the Agency in 2008. The Agency provided recommendations to improve the operations at one location and the cessation of operations at the other location. The Agency had also referred the matter to the Region Six RDC requesting updates be provided with regards to the implementation of measures recommended by the Agency. Since then, there were no further complaints from the RDC or any other individual with regards to the facilities at the said locations being a nuisance to surrounding residents or reports of non-compliance with the Agency’s recommended measures.

Please be advised that the Agency will conduct an investigation of the areas mentioned to address the concerns highlighted in the letter penned by Mr. Yusuf.

Yours faithfully,

Indarjit Ramdas
