Scorpions 171-5 replying to Jaguars 420 all out

Jamaica Scorpions, replaying to the Guyana Jaguars’ first innings score of 420 all out were 171-5 in their first innings, heading into day three of 2015/16 Professional Cricket League (PCL) Regional 4-Day tournament.

The Jamaicans trail by 249 runs with Devon Thomas (40) and wicket-keeper Aldaine Thomas (21) set to resume their innings today at the Providence National Stadium.

They need 100 more runs to avoid the follow-on.

Left-arm spinner and Guyana’s leading wicket-taker this season Gudakesh Motie picked up 3-33, taking his overall tally to 39 while left-arm swing bowler and leading wicket-taker among the seamers Raymon Reifer snatched up 2-42, including the prized wicket of Scorpions top-scorer Jermaine Blackwood who hit six fours and a six in his 62, taking his overall tally to 21 this year.

Guyana’s first innings total was mainly due to sterling contributions from; West Indies Under-19 Captain Shimron Hetmyer (107) who scored his maiden first class ton, Captain Leon Johnson who

resumed on 58, took his run tally past 800 runs, but missed out on his third century this season after falling for 93.

West Indies Test opener Rajendra Chandrika scored a stylish 76 on the first day to set the tone for the Jaguars before Guyana’s chief first innings tormentor, leg-break spinner Damion Jacobs bagged 5-131 of 48 overs for the Scorpions.

When the Scorpions batted, Reifer drew first blood by removing opener John Campbell (01) who mistimed a pull and was caught by Veerasammy Permaul who was patrolling the mid-on region. His partner Shacaya Thomas was aggressive from the get-go, crunching a quartet of boundaries and a six before he was out for 32.

When Blackwood joined the latter, he too took an aggressive approach against the Jaguars bowlers, matching his partner stroke for stroke as they added 55 for the second wicket, taking Jamaica to 70-1 at tea.

Motie struck three times during his spell after the tea break, removing Thomas, who was caught behind by gloveman Anthony Bramble, right-hander Andre McCarthy (03) who was tangled up by an arm ball and skipper Paul Palmer (06) who was pinned leg before wicket.

The strikes by the former West Indies U19 spinner left Jamaica reeling at 88-4 with Blackwood taking his score into the 40’s. Motie, after a brilliant spell was forced to go off the field after he seemed to have injured a finger on his bowling hand.

The visitors 100 came up as the final hour of play approached, the West Indies Test player reached his half-century off 106 balls but perished shortly after to Reifer who removed the right-hander lbw.

However, the two Thomas’s kept their team’s hope alive as they saw

off the remaining overs of the day.

Earlier, the hosts lost night watchman Bishoo to Jacobs in the fifth over of the day after resuming on 297-4. Johnson sought to turn his overnight 58 into another three figure score as he played an array of

eye-catching strokes, a few off Jacobs which reached the ropes. Johnson moved into the 90’s, hitting some six fours and one six with sights locked on another century this season but was deprived of

his milestone when he edged the medium-pacer Devon Thomas to his namesake, wicket-keeper Thomas after occupying the crease for 266 minutes

Barnwell (25), then smashed the left-arm seamer Brown for a four and six, before Jacobs trapped him lbw while Jason Dawes (1-39) was equal to the task removing Reifer (11) after lunch via the same.

The 400 came up after lunch and Permaul who chipped in with a useful 21 was the next to go, caught in first slip by Blackwood off Jacobs.

Bramble was left unbeaten on 21 after Motie was bowled by Dawes for four.

Today’s action begins at 9:30hrs
