AG wants attorneys under supervisory authority to ensure compliance with anti-laundering law

The Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Basil Williams, SC by letter dated June 14th 2017 extended congratulations to the newly elected President, Executives and Committee Members of the Guyana Bar Association, a release from his office said today.

The Attorney General in that letter, the release said, accepted the Bar Council’s invitation to a meeting. He further thanked them for their willingness, as expressed in their letter to him dated June 2nd, 2017, to assist and collaborate with him in the administration of justice.

As Head of the Bar, the release said the Attorney General is concerned with treating with the Bar on the following issues:-

• The need for Attorneys-at-law to be supervised by a supervisory authority to ensure compliance with the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) ACT, Cap. 10:11.

• Whether the membership of the Bar Association should be extended to State Attorneys?

• Continuing legal education for Attorneys-at-law in Guyana.

• The structure of the Bar.
