Residents of North Ruimveldt they are fed up of the multiple deplorable roads in their community and are pleading with the relevant authorities to fix them.

During a visit to the community last week, Stabroek News was shown several streets decorated with large potholes and other faults.

“It’s about time. It’s about time that somebody do something about these streets in this place here because it deh like this for a long time. A long, long time,” Jonathan Dickson, a resident of the area, related to Stabroek News. The man explained that he has been living in the area all his life and he can recall the streets being such a deplorable condition for over two decades.

“… It has been getting worse over the past years. Because [the roads are] not built with asphalt like the normal roads but with concrete is the only reason why it takes such a long time to break up,” he added.

Pointing at several potholes on his street, he related that often people who live in the area would attempt to alleviate the situation by filling the holes with a cement mix. “We try but we using normal cement and it don’t work. Whenever we try to full them the vehicles drive through and it gone back to how it was before,” Dickson stated.

“I drive and they does bruk up your vehicle brutal. One drop in them deep holes and you feel your vehicle scraping at the bottom and some of them the edge deep and could puncture your tyres,” he added.

The streets were built with large slabs of concrete and some of them have started to sink, which causes pointy edges to be raised that are dangerous to all vehicles and cyclists.

“Whenever I riding through here and I come across them holes and that edge I does got to be real careful because I remember one time I nearly fall off me bike,” a cyclist from the area related to Stabroek News.

The man echoed Dickson’s sentiments, emphasizing that for as long as he could remember the roads have been the same and continue to worsen as the days go by.

“It really is about time that they [the relevant authorities] address the situation. This is a developed area that is heavily populated and to have people driving through these types of streets is not right at all. It should not be,” the man added.

“I’ve had to repair my vehicle more than I should have. All the dropping in holes and driving over those edges do a lot of damage and sometimes you can’t avoid them all and have to drive through some because is not one road, or two, or three, is nuff of them bad. So if you avoid one you’re bound to reach up with another one especially when it’s dark and you don’t know the road. You does feel for you car, you know,” Dickson said.
