Fire of unknown origin destroys Diamond residence

A man is now homeless after a relative of unsound mind allegedly set his Diamond, East Bank Demerara, home on fire yesterday morning.

The charred remains of the house

According to reports reaching Stabroek News, whilst the owner was away from his home, sometime around 10:50 am yesterday, neighbours noticed fire and smoke emanating from the residence located at Lot 1819, Section C, Diamond Housing Scheme, and subsequently, alerted the Fire Service.

The Fire Service arrived some minutes later but were unable to save the house which had already been destroyed.

The owner of the house, family members and neighbours were hesitant to speak, and related that they did not know how the fire could have started. Compton Sparman, head of operations at the Guyana Fire Service, related that initial investigations revealed that a relative of unsound mind, who is currently missing, set the house on fire.

According to one of the relatives, the house was well-furnished, and millions would’ve been lost in the fire. One neighbour explained that they` heard several explosions prior to seeing the fire.

The origin of the fire is unknown, however, another neighbour related that a gas bottle was found in the yard.
