Man in Number 19 accident pleads guilty to driving under the influence

The driver of the bus, which was involved in an accident along the Number 19 Public Road was on Friday read the charge of driving under the influence of alcohol when he appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court and he pleaded guilty.

Kemchand Shivprashad, 47, of Grove, East Bank Berbice appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore and pleaded guilty to the charge. He was fined $9, 500 and Magistrate Moore suspended his driver’s licence for two years.

Meanwhile, the court also heard, that in December 2016 Shivprashad was charged and fined on the West Coast of Berbice for driving under the influence as well.

After the case was heard in the court, Shivprashad was then re-arrested, since four children are still hospitalized.

Shariza Khairoodin, 8, who sustained a fractured skull was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospi-tal late on Thursday evening. Her sisters Nesha, 13, and Fazeela, 10, and another relative, Ryan Garib, also 10, have been admitted at the New Amsterdam Public Hospi-tal with broken ankles and other injuries. They are said to be in a stable condition.

Some 14 persons were travelling in minibus BNN 9791 along the Number 19 Public Road Thursday evening heading further up the Corentyne area when it collided with a trailer, which was attached to the back of a truck, around 8 pm.
