Wins for Pele, Santos as Northern Rangers, Riddim Squad draw

On a night that featured wins for Pele and Santos FC, Northern Rangers secured a 1-1 result with Riddim Squad when the Corona Beer Invitational football tournament continued on Friday.

The Northern Rangers/ Riddim Squad fixture, held at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Bourda, was marred by the injury of speedy winger Donald McKenzie in the 55th minute.

McKenzie suffered a broken left leg following a crunching tackle from an opposing defender. The injury led to the fixture being suspended for several minutes due to the absence of a medical vehicle at the venue to transport the player to the hospital.

At the time of the stoppage, Riddim Squad was ahead 1-0 via a Sceyon Hope penalty which was converted in the 17th minute. However, upon resumption, substitute forward Sunil Logan equalised in the 66th minute also from the penalty spot.

Meanwhile, Pele downed Eastveldt 2-0 in the first fixture of the triple-header. Thairys Payne and Dorwin George scored in the 21st and 61st minute while Santos edged Flamingo 2-1 with Travis Cottam scoring the winning goal in the 90th+5 minute.

Prior to the last minute conversion, Kacy John had given Santos the lead in the fourth minute while Leon Yaw had equalised in the 78th minute for Flamingo. The event resumes today at the same venue.

In the curtain raiser, home side GFC will lock horns with Black Pearl at 17:00hrs while Western Tigers will oppose Beacons FC from 19:00hrs. The feature contest will then pit the Guyana Police Force (GPF) against Camptown at 21:00hrs.

The first prize is $1,000,000 and the championship trophy while the second, third and fourth placed finishers will pocket, $400,000, $200,000 and $100,000 respectively.
