Taxi driver held at Little Diamond after ganja found in tyre

A taxi driver was yesterday remanded for allegedly trafficking in 12 pounds of ganja.

It is alleged that on December 13th, 2018, at little Diamond Public Road, East Bank Demerara, Ben Cumberbatch (no address provided) had in his possession 12 pounds of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

Cumberbatch pleaded not guilty to the charge read to him by Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court. He was represented by attorney Melville Duke.

Police Prosecutor Seon Blackman objected to bail because of the amount of cannabis involved in the offence. According to the facts, Police were on duty when the driver was stopped. A search was carried out on the vehicle and the narcotics were found in the tyre of the car. Police Prosecutor Seon Blackman said that the narcotics were concealed and so the driver had to have knowledge of it.

Cumberbatch was remanded and the matter was adjourned until January 7th, 2018, at the Providence Magistrate’s Court for fixture.
