The PNCR today said it will continue to advocate for a credible list of electors.

In a statement, it said that “Guyanese need a voters list they can trust; to hold elections they can trust, to give them a government they can trust.”

The statement will be seen in the context of Tuesday’s decision by GECOM Chairman Claudette Singh to bring an early end to house to house registration. The PNCR statement did not refer to her decision.

An abridged version of the PNCR statement follows:

The People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) remains committed to respecting the independence of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), the laws of our country and upholding the constitution of Guyana. The PNCR has always advocated for the holding of credible elections in the shortest possible time. In this regard, we are in agreement with the Chairperson of GECOM that a credible list is critical to a fair and free election.

The Constitution of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana mandates that; “the Commission (GECOM) shall exercise general direction and supervision over the registration of electors and administrative conduct of all elections of members of the National Assembly”. The PNCR respect and recognize that GECOM and only GECOM has that authority.

The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) is prepared to go to the polls with any list; they don’t care if the list is corrupted. Why?

However, the PNCR will continue to advocate for a credible list of electors. Guyanese need a voters list they can trust; to hold elections they can trust, to give them a government they can trust. This is central to our democracy and our future.

It is essential that we hold fair, free and credible elections and we cannot do so if the people of Guyana believe that the list is outdated and corrupted. The process that GECOM employs to sanitize the list must therefore take into consideration the concerns expressed.

The PNCR is pleased that the data gathered from the current house to house registration will be considered in the new list of electors. The PNCR will use the proposed extended claims and objections period to rigorously peruse and where necessary further sanitize the new list of electors.

The PNCR and our Partners that make up the APNU+AFC Coalition are in full election mode. We are ready! The PPP have had their time and their track record proves that they are dishonest, unscrupulous and too incompetent to govern our country again.
