The Head of the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) says that this morning it was reported that a suspected chemical spill occurred in the vicinity of the Laparkan Wharf located on Lombard Street, Georgetown.

In a post on his Facebook page he said that a team including the CDC, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Guyana Fire Service and the Guyana Water Incorporated was deployed to conduct a risk assessment and execute appropriate response. The Guyana Police Force was also contacted to provide cordon and traffic control.

In the meantime, the CDC is advising the public to stay clear of the area to avoid any contamination, Craig said.
With preparations for first oil not far away, major concerns have been expressed about the readiness of the CDC and other agencies to handle spills and related issues.
