The Mayor and Councillors of the City of Georgetown yesterday announced plans for a cleaning exercise on Sunday within the Stabroek ward. As a result, the City Council has also said that no vending would be permitted on the day of the exercise, in which all Stabroek vendors and operators have been invited to participate. A press release issued by the council yesterday said the exercise would be conducted from 7 am to 2 pm and will see cleaning take place in Water, King, Wellington, America, Regent, Robb and Alexander streets.
“This exercise is necessary to maintain environmental cleanliness in the City of Georgetown. Council has observed that some citizens are trying their utmost to keep the environment clean, while there are those who still continue disposing of their refuse in waterways; canals, street drains, alleyways and on parapets,” it noted.
The noted that the City Engineer’s Department and the Solid Waste Management Department will be providing the necessary support in the form of trucks and other vehicles to cart away the sludge and refuse from the exercise. It was further noted also that three members of the businesses community have so far indicated their willingness to provide equipment and tools to the Council to aid in the cleaning. “Vendors are asked to make a special effort to attend since this exercise would help to enhance the environment in which they ply their trade,” the release added.
