A fire suspected to be of electrical origin, ravaged an unoccupied house at Good Hope, East Coast Demerara, on Friday evening.

According to reports, the fire began around 9 pm and resulted in complete destruction to the two- storey concrete structure at Phase One, Good Hope.

Stabroek News understands that the house, which bore a “for sale” sign, was recently sold and had been vacant for the past two months.

A construction worker who spoke with this newspaper on Saturday, explained that a co-worker of his was at the construction site opposite the house on Friday evening, when he noticed one of the electrical wires leading to the house sparking.

Not long after, he said fire engulfed the house, causing minor damage to a neighbouring house.

Another resident who spoke with  Stabroek News said she had already retired to bed when the fire started but was awoken by the commotion outside, created by persons who attempted to douse the flames.

It was related too, that though the fire service was contacted, it took them some time to arrive and extinguish the blaze.

Stabroek News was unable to contact the owner of the home for a comment.
