Band Room, `A’ Division A reach final

Band Room and A-Division-A will face-off in the final of the Guyana Police Force [GPF] Inter-Division/Branch 5-Aside Football Championship, following semi-final wins on Tuesday.

Following scoreless regulation and extra time periods at the Eve Leary ground, a penalty shoot-out was required to decide the outcome in front of a sizable crowd.

The opening round of the penalty shoot-out failed to decide a winner, as it ended 3-3. However, Band-Room would prevail in the sudden death round, netting from the distance, only for Presidential Guard to fail from the mark.

Their opponent A-Division-A secured their place in the championship contest in a straight forward manner compliments of a 1-0 victory over F-Division-A.

The dependable Marvin Josiah found the back of the net in the 45th minute of extra time, after the regulation period ended scoreless.

Meanwhile, Deon Rodney, Tournament Coordinator during an invited comment said, “While we normally have inter-division football, this is the first time that it had a monetary incentive which raised the magnitude of the tournament. Before it was about the bragging rights but now it’s better because of the money and bragging rights.”

He added, “Everyone came out because we never had so many teams participate. We had 24 teams contest the competition and we intend to build on it in the future.”

Up to press time, the grand finale and third place playoff was underway.

Winner of the event will pocket $100,000 and the championship trophy. The runner-up and third place finisher will pocket $50,000 and $25,000 respectively and the corresponding accolade.

The Best Dressed Team will also receive $10,000. On the individual side, the Most Valuable Player [MVP] will receive $10,000, with the Highest Goal Scorer also walking away with $10,000.
