Commentator Kit Nascimento today condemned a request by APNU+AFC to have cell phones and cameras banned from the recount of votes from March 2 general elections.
The coalition made the request today at a meeting between GECOM and the parties that contested the March 2nd general elections. The meeting was preliminary to the setting of a date for the start of the recount.
In a statement today, Nascimento, who was a private sector observer at the elections said that the APNU+AFC request must be rejected by GECOM Chair Claudette Singh.
Nascimento in his statement said:
“I have just learnt that even before the recount begins, (Amna) Ally and (Joe) Harmon of APNU+AFC have declared their intention to hide treachery from the world by seeking to ban cellphones and deny cameras at the recount.
“The CARICOM Observers, the International Observers and the Diplomatic Community must never lend their presence nor their tolerance to this.
The recount of an already horrible, nakedly fraudulent election must be done for all to see.
“The Chairman of GECOM must ensure that an open, transparent and totally credible recount is held and a result delivered free of contention and controversy. She owes it to her country if not to herself”.
GECOM has already been disinclined to agree to live streaming of the recount. This among other decisions have led to ongoing concerns that the rigging of the general election will continue into the recount.
