A responsible knock from Rohan Mangal aced the chase to see RP Construction record a three-wicket win over WD Masters in the latest round of the Guyana Cricket Board/Tropical Springs Over-40 T20 tournament.

The Demerara Zone match up at Enmore Community Centre yesterday saw WD Masters winning the toss and opting to bat in overcast conditions and a damp outfield due to early morning showers. The Region Three side failed to capitalize on a good start and faded away to 95 for eight in their allotted overs. Legends replied with 96 for seven with five balls to spare.

Mangal piloted the chase with a masterful knock of 37 not out. Despite wickets tumbling at the other end, Mangal stroked three fours and a six, which was pulled over mid-wicket off of Ganesh Persaud in the 14th over.

The left-hander was supported by Vishwanauth Gobin, who was the only other batsman to reach double figures. Gobin played cautiously and was happy to turn over the strike in his 15-run cameo.

Throughout the middle overs, left-arm spinner, Steve Haripal pulled the chase back for Masters with two quick wickets but seemed to pull his hamstring in his final over to end with two for 10.

Fast bowler, Sudesh ‘Butch’ Persaud found his rhythm early on and showed red-hot form by uprooting the stumps of Ramchand Jailal (6) and Khaleel Mohamed (4) to return two for seven. Seenarine Mathura, Abib Hanif and Chaibraj Ramcharran picked up one wicket each.

Earlier, four run outs hampered Masters’ chase but Sudesh Persaud’s unbeaten 20 gave the west side unit a respectable total. Persaud showed that his fitness level could rival anyone including his son, former Guyana under-19 captain, Travis Persaud.

Elroy Fernandes and Ramcharran both made 18 but no other batsman reached double figures. Veteran, Chatterpaul Singh picked up two for nine with his legbreak bowling.

The morning match at the venue saw Bel Air Rubis Ultra Tec awarded a walk over against KV Construction who failed to turn up for the third time.
