Three persons are in custody after a Victoria, East Coast Demerara labourer was chopped to death on Sunday at around 4.30 am on Leopold Street in the city.
The police say that enquiries disclosed that at 3.30 am on the said day, Nico Layne, 29, was on High Street where a game of cards was being played by a group of men and after some time he realized that his bicycle was missing.
This caused him to go in search of the bicycle and around 4.30 am he was seen running on High Street heading south and then east on Leopold Street. He was being chased by three suspects – two males and a female – armed with a knife and a cutlass.
The police said that Layne fell and he then suffered several chops and stabs about his body. The perpetrators then fled after which Layne was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
He was pronounced dead by a doctor on duty. The police say that the body was examined and what appeared to be a wound was seen under his right armpit, one to the upper left side of his chest and three on his right forearm.
The three suspects were later arrested. One was seen with a wound on his forehead and on the left side of his face. He is presently receiving medical attention at the GPHC under guard.
The police say that he claims that Layne tried to rob his reputed wife at the Stabroek market area and he intervened and Layne wounded him with a knife.
The scene was captured on CCTV, the police said. Statements have been taken and investigations are in progress.
