Trudy DeHaarte, 48, a well-known animal rights activist, fatally shot herself at the Brickdam Police Station this morning.
According to the police, DeHaarte, who had been receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital Psychiatric, went to the police station at about 09:00 hrs and committed the act.
She had moments earlier had a confrontation with her taxi-driver husband and damaged his vehicle. He subsequently made a report to the police at the Brickdam station, where she followed him.
The police said the man pointed the woman out to a rank and she was escorted into the compound. She then proceeded to the entrance of the Enquiries Office, where she ended her life.
The woman’s sister, Emily Clarke, told reporters that her sister was a licensed firearm holder.

The Guyana Society for the Prevention for the Cruelty to Animals mourns the unfortunate passing of one of its employees, Ms. Trudy DeHaarte.
As an animal inspector with the GSPCA, Trudy worked tirelessly to help animals in need. In life, she helped so many people and animals. We remember her in this way and for the all the good that she did. We ask that you respect the memory of a life that made a difference.
Investigations by the Guyana Police Force are continuing to determine the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
On behalf of the GSPCA and the animal welfare fraternity, we extend deepest condolences to Trudy’s family. We will miss her dearly.
