Gov’t concerned about `poor quality’ of telecoms services

The Guyana Government today wrote the Chair of the Public Utilities Commission (PUC), Dela Britton expressing concern at what it said were numerous reports of the poor quality of public telecommunications services.

Prime Minister Mark Phillips, who has responsibility for the telecoms sector, in the letter to Britton said that these reports pertained especially to “fixed and mobile broadband internet services”.

In the correspondence released to the press, he requested that the PUC examine the Telecommunications (Consumer Protection) Regulations 2020 with a view to amending Schedules 1 and 2 to include at a minimum the following quality of service parameters with the requisite definition and standards.

1.       Availability

2.       Packet Loss Ratio (Upload and Download)

3.       Average Throughout for Packet data

4.       Latency

5.       Jitter

The PM advised Britton that he will be following up on the procedural requirements for implementing the amendments.
