Disciplinary charge recommended over order for cops to trail Norton

The ranks who trailed Opposition Leader, Aubrey Norton last month after he visited the family of Quindon Bacchus on the East Coast were acting on instructions they received from the then Deputy Commander of Region 4C, Superintendent Alistair Roberts.

Stabroek News was reliably informed that that the police received legal advice for a disciplinary charge to be instituted against Roberts for acting in a manner likely to bring discredit to the force.

Information reaching Stabroek News revealed that on the day in question, Roberts instructed ranks of the Sparendaam Police Station to follow Norton.

The act was “intentionally” carried out, sources said.

Norton was trailed on June 13th by two policemen on motorcycles after leaving the Golden Grove, ECD home of Bacchus, who was fatally shot by the police.

The following Legal Advice was given today (July 13, 2022):

(1) Incident in relation to ranks following the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Aubrey Norton, which occurred on June 13th, 2022

ADVICE:

Superintendent Alistair Roberts to be charged with the offence of acting in a manner likely to bring discredit on the reputation of the Force, Contrary to Section 4(d) (vii) of the Police (Discipline) Act, Chapter 17:01, in relation to giving his Junior Ranks instructions to escort the Leader of the Opposition and not being truthful about it.
