Lethem miner chopped to death, suspect shot dead whilst trying to flee – police

The police today said that they are probing the murder of Lethem miner Andre Williams and the shooting death of the murder suspect, Ryan Singh while he was trying to flee.

Singh, who allegedly murdered Williams on Wednesday July 27, 2022, at about 09:00hrs at Peady Machie Backdam, Cuyuni River, was fatally shot after he attempted to chop a Supernumerary Constable attached to Hopkinson Mining Inc., who along with another man attempted to detain the suspect.

Information from the Region stated that on the said date, Williams and Singh were seen walking on the roadway in an intoxicated state after they were observed consuming alcohol (High Wine). An argument ensued between the two men, and the suspect (Singh) who was armed with a cutlass dealt Williams  several chops to his body. Williams fell to the ground.

The suspect tried to escape on foot but was pursued and  later confronted by Avondale Glan and Chevez Andrews, a Supernumerary Constable employed with Hopkinson Mining Inc. on the Blackwater Main Road.

The suspect was still armed with the cutlass and allegedly attacked Andrews by firing two chops at him.

Andrews, who was armed with an AR15 rifle warded off the chops with the rifle and subsequently discharged three rounds in the suspect’s direction hitting him in the upper back and right thigh.

The suspect ran a short distance away and fell in a clump of bushes.

Detectives in the Region were alerted and visited the scenes, where  Williams’ body was examined and three gaping wounds to the back of his head, three deep lacerations to the right shoulder and a gaping wound on the lower back were seen. The suspect’s body was also examined and the mentioned gunshot injuries were seen.

The bodies were subsequently escorted to Bartica.
