The Guyana Power and Light Inc today explained the causes of the recent service interruptions over the last weekend.
In a statement, it said that on Saturday, October 15, at approximately 11am a loss of generation at the Vreed-en-Hoop Plant affected service to customers on the West Demerara. Power was restored at approximately 11:43 am.
On Sunday, October 16, customers from Enmore to Good Hope, East Coast Demerara and Colombia to Seafield, West Coast Berbice, suffered an interruption in service supply from 8:53 am to 11:55 am due to preventative maintenance works in the Switchyard at the Garden of Eden (GOE) generation facility.
Further, at approximately 4.30 pm that say, customers in Demerara and Berbice experienced an interruption in electricity supply when the Company’s L1 Transmission Line tripped. The Transmission Line at the time was transferring approximately 36 Megawatts, GPL said.
“This significant loss of generation activated the protection system at the GOE Plant, which caused a cascading effect, resulting in a shutdown of the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System. At approximately 17:45 hrs, all areas were re-powered”, GPL said.
It added that a detailed investigation has begun to determine the root cause of the recent events.
“Our Company remains cognisant of the inconveniences associated with unplanned service interruptions and continues to work towards minimizing these occurrences”, GPL said.
